Midjourney V6 Style Reference Command Updates

MJ Announcement: –sref has updated the latest style reference algorithm command this morning –sv, which works best when combined with –sw parameter (based on testing).

Official Statement

The official announcement states that two new style reference algorithms have been released, which is a new “version control” feature, and the image scoring has reopened free GPU time.

1. We have released two new style reference algorithms, which is a new “version control” feature

· The latest version of the style reference algorithm (now the default) is more accurate and suitable for MJ V6 and Niji V6

· You can set the version of the style reference algorithm using –sv, with 4 options available:

–sv 1 The original style reference algorithm we released

–sv 2 The default value up to today

–sv 3 A new version of sv1 with better performance and a more “vibey” feel

–sv 4 A new version of sv2 with improved performance (this is the default value)

2. We are reopening free GPU time for image scoring

· The first 2000 scorers each day will receive 1 free fast GPU hour

· Rank images here: https://www.midjourney.com/rank

· These ratings help improve our algorithms, populate the exploration page, and will also be used for upcoming model personalization features

· If you use the 1/2 hotkey on PC or use it on mobile, the ranking speed is the fastest

Testing the Difference of Adding or Not Adding the –sw Parameter

Details and usage methods that need to be tested in advance, and why to use it, in what scenarios to test.

· Usage: Enter in the prompt box Prompt Description + –sref URL (link) + –sv 1/2/3/4 + –sw 50

· Details: The URL link is the address of an image you uploaded, –sw 50 (the default is 100, strongest style, 0 weakens to none, 50 takes the middle value)

· Why use the above method: It is found in the details that without the –sw command, the default is 100, which means the style change of the generated image is the strongest, which also means that some details become more missing from the original image. Therefore, if you want to change while retaining some details, you can take a middle value –sw 50 (note here, I take 50 as the middle value, and the effect in testing was the best, friends can adjust around 50 as needed).

· Scene Testing: Fixed anime scenes, realistic character scenes, illustration scenes, 3D characters.

It can be seen that when using –sref, using –sv numbers 1/2/3/4, combined with the –sw parameter, the style’s light and shadow is significantly better than without the –sw parameter.

And –sv 4 is the most in line with my description, –sv 1 is the coolest, –sv 2 gives facial expressions to the initial machine, –sv 3 the character’s clothing is correct, but the emotion is missing.

By comparison, it can be seen that the facial features of the characters have undergone significant changes with or without the –sw parameter, because –sref is used to adjust the style, and consistent characters need to use the –cref parameter, which will not be elaborated here. From the style perspective, –sv 4 and the original image’s hair color are relatively consistent, and the character’s posture is consistent. It means that for realistic characters, to remain consistent with the original image, the –cref parameter is needed. –sv 3 changed the hair color, –sv 1 and —sv 2 have different directions in style.

Compared to the above, I prefer –sv 2, –sv 4 is also much better than not using the –sw parameter. –sv 1/3 do not match the prompt description.

Summary: For fixed anime characters (using –sw parameter), in the use of –sref under –sv 1234, –sv 4 and –sv 3 are overall better than –sv 1 –sv 2. For realistic characters, in the use of –sref under –sv 1234, it is necessary to combine the –cref parameter to ensure that the facial features of the characters remain unchanged, in terms of style, I personally prefer –sv 3.In terms of illustrations, the style is more variable without using –sw.3D characters look better with the use of –sw parameter.
