As we all know, GL.iNet’s smart wireless routers are developed based on OpenWrt firmware. What makes our smart routers different from regular routers?
In the previous article, we introduced what an OpenWrt router is.
Regular home routers mainly support devices to connect to the internet, so when purchasing a router, people pay more attention to whether the hardware configuration provides a smooth internet experience.
Routers with firmware development capabilities have many more fun features compared to regular home routers. Today, I will introduce three common functions.
01
Smart QoS Settings
QoS (Quality of Service) is a security mechanism for networks, used to solve problems like network latency and congestion.
The QoS function allows the router to automatically allocate network traffic, ensuring that each connected user’s online activities proceed smoothly.
You can also set manual allocation, giving each device a fixed bandwidth, thus achieving a reasonable bandwidth distribution. By manually setting the QoS configuration, you can set the upload and download speeds for each device, making bandwidth resource allocation more reasonable and controlling bandwidth effectively.
In a situation where multiple people share the network, you can allocate different network bandwidths to different devices according to your needs. For example, parents may want to restrict their child’s gaming speed, so they can “reasonably set” the internet speed for the child’s device, allowing the child to focus on studying. If you want your computer to run faster, you can appropriately lower the speed of other mobile devices.
02
Built-in or External Hard Drive
The router can connect to a hard drive, building a personal cloud that enables media server functionality, offline downloads, remote management, file sharing, and more.
The router can back up photos, music, videos, etc., to the built-in hard drive, which can serve as a file sharing center to share photos and videos with family and friends.
It can also be remotely controlled during work hours to download movies, so they are ready for you to watch when you get home.
03
DNS Security Encryption
OpenWrt smart routers can achieve a more comfortable online experience through the installation of ad-blocking or application filtering plugins. Most GL.iNet brand routers come with Cloudflare or NextDNS for DNS encryption, which effectively protects privacy and prevents DNS data from being eavesdropped or manipulated.
It protects devices from malware, phishing, and viruses, intercepting ads and trackers in websites and applications to ensure privacy and security.
GL.iNet’s routers, developed based on OpenWrt firmware, provide a more user-friendly system UI and optimized software installation process for novice router users, making it easy to get started. It also supports tech experts to compile systems and customize more fun router features.
If you are currently using a regular home router and want a more feature-rich router, it’s time to upgrade.
