Meaning and Functions of Siemens CNC MMC, MCP, PCU, NCU

MMC (Man Machine Communication) includes: OP (Operation panel) unit, MMC, MCP (Machine Control Panel) three parts. MMC is essentially a computer, with its own independent CPU, and can also have a hard disk and floppy drive; the OP unit is the monitor of this computer, and the control software for Siemens MMC is also on this computer.

1. MMC

We commonly use two types of MMC:

MMCC100.2 and MMC103, where MMC100.2 has a CPU of 486, which cannot support a hard disk;

while MMC103 has a CPU of Pentium, can support a hard disk, generally, users pair SINUMERIK810D with MMC100.2, and SINUMERIK840D with MMC103.

PCU (PC UNIT) is specially developed to work with Siemens’ latest operation panels OP10, OP10S, OP10C, OP12, OP15, etc. Currently, there are three types of PCU modules: PCU20, PCU50, PCU70, where PCU20 corresponds to MMC100.2, does not support a hard disk but supports a floppy drive;

PCU50 and PCU70 correspond to MMC103, can support a hard disk, and unlike MMC: PCU50 software is based on WINDOWS NT.

The software for PCU is called HMI, which is divided into two types:

Embedded HMI and Advanced HMI. Generally, the standard supply of PCU20 is loaded with embedded HMI, while PCU50 and PCU70 are loaded with advanced HMI.

2. OP

The OP unit generally includes a 10.4 inch TFT display and an NC keyboard. Depending on user requirements, Siemens offers different OP units, such as: OP030, OP031, OP032, OP032S, among which OP031 is the most commonly used.

3. MCP

MCP is specifically configured for CNC machine tools, and it is also a node on the OPI. Its layout varies according to application scenarios; currently, there are lathe version MCP and milling version MCP. For 810D and 840D, the MCP MPI addresses are 14 and 6, set by the S3 switch after MCP.

For SINUMERIK840D, MPI (Multiple Point Interface) bus technology is applied, with a transmission rate of 187.5k/ second, and the OP unit is a node in this bus network. To improve human-machine interaction efficiency, there is also OPI (Operator Panel Interface) bus, with a transmission rate of 1.5M/ second.

l CNC and Drive Units

1. NCU CNC Unit

The CNC unit of SINUMERIK840D is called NCU (Numerical Control Unit): the central control unit , responsible for all functions of NC, logical control of the machine tool , and communication with MMC. It consists of a COM CPU board, a PLC CPU board, and a DRIVE board.

Depending on the selected hardware such as CPU chips and functional configurations, NCU is divided into several types: NCU561.2, NCU571.2, NCU572.2, NCU573.2 (12 axes), and NCU573.2 (31 axes), etc. Similarly, the NCU unit integrates SINUMERIK840D CNC CPU and SIMATIC PLC CPU chips, including corresponding CNC software and PLC control software, and features MPI or Profibus interfaces, RS232 interfaces, handwheels, and measurement interfaces, PCMCIA card slots, etc. The difference is that the NCU unit is very thin, and all drive modules are arranged on its right side.

2. Digital Drive

Digital servo: the execution part of motion control, composed of 611D servo drive and 1FT6 (1FK6) motors, SINUMERIK840D configured drives generally use SIMODRIVE611D. It includes two parts: power module + drive module (power module).

Power module: primarily provides control and power supply for NC and the drive device, generates bus voltage, and monitors the power and module status. Depending on capacity, any less than 15KW does not come with a feed device, referred to as U/E power module; any greater than 15KW must come with a feed device, noted as I/RF power module, identifiable by the order number or label on the module.

611D digital drive: is the new generation of digital control bus-driven AC drives, divided into dual-axis modules and single-axis modules, with corresponding feed servo motors using 1FT6 or 1FK6 series, and encoder signals are 1Vpp sine waves, enabling full closed-loop control. The spindle servo motor is of 1PH7 series.

PLC Module

The PLC part of SINUMERIK810D/840D system uses Siemens SIMATIC S7-300 software and modules, arranged from left to right on the same rail as the power module (Power Supply), interface module (Interface Module), and signal module (Signal Module). The CPU of NC is integrated into CCU or NCU.
