Recently, several students have messaged us asking for a complete tutorial on Runway. Coincidentally, in November, Runway released new features such as the motion paintbrush. So today, I will provide a comprehensive and detailed tutorial on using Gen1 to Gen2.
Runway is an online video editing and production website based abroad. As a top global AI video creation model, it currently offers over 30 AI application tools, including video background removal, automatic object tracking, smart subtitles, smart audio beat detection, noise reduction, online collaborative editing, text-to-image, text-to-video, and image-to-video, among others.
You can use this AI tool to create any high-quality video content you want. Application scenarios include film production, advertisement creation, image generation, etc. Moreover, Runway’s interface is very user-friendly and simple, making it very friendly for beginners. If you have video editing needs, Runway is definitely worth a try!

Due to the length of the article, for everyone’s convenience in learning, I will split the Runway tutorial into four articles. This article mainly explains Gen1 in detail.
1. Account Registration and Login
Website: https://Runwayml.com/
First, click the link to enter the Runway official homepage, and select “Sign Up – It’s Free” in the upper right corner to register and log in.
On the login page, you can choose to register a new account or log in using your Google email account. (Of course, the process for getting free video duration and registration is also very simple; you only need email verification.)
The Runway free account can only generate videos at 720p resolution and 125 free credits, allowing for the creation of 4-second videos. Each second consumes 5 credits, and you can generate up to 31 videos, and it cannot remove the watermark.
If your free credits run out, or if you want higher resolution, watermark-free, and longer videos, you can click “Upgrade to Standard” in the lower left corner to select a package that meets your needs.
Runway standard and professional accounts cost $12 and $28 per month, respectively.
2. Video Module
The video module has a total of 3 sub-functions: video generation, video editing, audio and subtitle editing. Next, I will explain each function one by one.
1.Generate Videos(Video Generation Function)
Click on the Generate Videos in the right navigation bar, and after the screen switches, there are 3 options: Gen1, Gen2, FI
①Gen1: (Video to Video) Stylize editing of the original video through text prompts or image references; you can also understand it as a video editor. Currently, new videos can be generated through three modes: Video + Image, Video + Style, Video + Text
Gen1 specific operation:
Click on Gen1 to enter the editing interface, then upload the video.
(1) Video + Image: Click on Image, then select Demo Images to upload an image. Of course, you can also choose an existing image from the system. It is best to choose images with distinct styles so that the generated video effect can be strongly contrasted.
Next, set the style intensity; the higher the value, the closer the generated video effect is to the image style. Conversely, the lower the value, the closer the video effect is to the original video style. It is generally recommended to set it between 10-20%.
Finally, you can click Preview styles to preview. If there are no issues, you can generate the video.

(2) Video + Style: Click on Presets; here you will find 24 styles preset by the website, including sketch, origami, pen, watercolor, clay, metal, etc. You can choose any one style to overlay on the original video. You also need to set the style value, and after previewing OK, generate the video.

(3) Video + Text: Enter the prompt in the dialog box to synthesize a new video from the existing video.

The above three modes can also perform advanced parameter settings. Click on Advanced to increase multiple parameter configuration options.
For each parameter, you can refer to the following parameter explanations for operation.
Currently, a single video can only generate 4 seconds. You can choose to save the video style consistency using the Seed value, then generate multiple 4-second videos, and finally use editing tools to splice them into a complete long video.
