What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a chatbot program released in the United States on November 30, 2022, and it is a natural language processing tool driven by artificial intelligence technology.
It can engage in conversations by learning and understanding human language, interact based on the context of the chat, and truly converse like a human. It can even accomplish tasks such as writing emails, video scripts, copywriting, translation, and coding.
How Is ChatGPT Different from Previous AIs?
OpenAI states that the ChatGPT chatbot acknowledges its mistakes, questions the erroneous assumptions preset by users, and refuses inappropriate requests made by users.
The application scenarios for ChatGPT include developing chatbots, writing and debugging computer programs, and creating works in literature and media, including music, TV shows, fairy tales, poetry, and lyrics. In some testing situations, ChatGPT outperformed ordinary human testers in education, exams, and answering test questions.
For example, ChatGPT can create text in the style of Lu Xun, write weekly reports for Musk in the tone of a senior data engineer at Twitter, help you find ways to confess to a girl, or directly identify bugs in code.
On February 4, Israeli President Isaac Herzog delivered a speech partially written by AI, becoming the first leader to publicly use ChatGPT.
Guohai Securities pointed out in a research report that as ChatGPT continues to be fine-tuned, it is expected to be applied in various fields such as healthcare, customer service robots, virtual humans, translation, marketing, gaming, social interaction, education, and home care.

ChatGPT Is Making Many Industries Nervous

Not long after its release, ChatGPT has already gained multiple accolades.
First, it has the strong endorsement of the world’s richest man. As a former partner of ChatGPT and the new owner of Twitter, Musk has tweeted several times about ChatGPT, stating, “ChatGPT is frighteningly good.” With danger comes the realization that we are not far from powerful artificial intelligence. Bill Gates praised in an interview with Forbes that the significance of ChatGPT is comparable to the birth of PCs and the internet.
Secondly, two tech giants, Google and Microsoft, have entered the fray. On February 2, Microsoft announced that all its products would integrate ChatGPT, in addition to the previously announced Bing search engine and Office, Microsoft will also integrate ChatGPT into its cloud computing platform Azure, allowing developers to access AI models through Azure’s OpenAI service.
Less than a month after the launch of ChatGPT, the Google CEO issued a “red alert” internally and announced a comprehensive adjustment of Google’s work in AI for 2023. Subsequently, Google announced that its new conversational AI service named Bard would be opened to trusted testers, with a public release expected in the coming weeks.
Apple has also made corresponding moves. According to Bloomberg, influenced by ChatGPT, Apple will hold its annual internal AI summit next week, similar to an AI WWDC, limited to Apple employees.
ChatGPT also has a certain influence in the investment banking sector. Dylan Roberts, a partner and head at KPMG, stated that ChatGPT could become a powerful research tool in the investment banking field. AI can collect and analyze vast amounts of client data and provide suggestions, such as identifying companies that need to raise funds or may become acquisition targets.
Charles Hearn, CTO of fintech company Alloy, expressed concerns, stating that this product hides a “black box.” This means that AI can provide answers, but humans cannot trace how those answers were generated. This process may make it difficult to meet compliance requirements in the financial services industry.
ChatGPT could also serve as a “financial manager.” Foreign media have tested ChatGPT’s ability to explain Warren Buffett’s investment strategies and how to invest during an economic downturn. ChatGPT seems to perform well, demonstrating the potential to identify investment strategies and propose investment suggestions based on its analysis.
Will ChatGPT replace search engines? Previously, ChatGPT itself provided a “negative” answer: ChatGPT is not a search engine. Its purpose is not to provide information searches. Unlike search engines that index web pages and match search terms to provide information, ChatGPT helps users solve problems by answering natural language questions. Therefore, there is no direct competition between them, and they cannot overthrow each other.
Wang Yuquan, founding partner of Haiyin Capital, stated that currently, ChatGPT cannot replace search engines mainly due to high computational costs and the inability to obtain real-time data, but this matter itself is still worth the attention of tech giants.

What Impact Does ChatGPT Have on Chinese Users?

Currently, Chinese mobile phone numbers cannot register for ChatGPT accounts, and many Chinese users are being shut out. Some netizens are calling for, “China must have its own ChatGPT.”
Recently, several well-known internet companies have announced patents related to human-computer dialogue. For instance, Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. has applied for a patent for a “human-computer dialogue method, device, equipment, and computer-readable storage medium” that enables smooth communication between humans and machines.
Alibaba DAMO Academy (Hangzhou) Technology Co., Ltd. has applied for a patent for “human-computer dialogue and pre-training language model training methods, systems, and electronic devices” to improve the accuracy of question-and-answer interactions.
Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. has applied for a patent for a “human-computer dialogue method and dialogue system” that can recognize abnormal user behavior and respond accordingly.
According to China News Service, Baidu’s ChatGPT-like project has been named “Wenxin Yiyan” (ERNIE Bot) and is expected to complete internal testing in March and open to the public. Following the pace of Google and Microsoft, Wenxin Yiyan may also open internal testing ahead of schedule.
According to Tianyancha App, there are currently over 400 patent applications related to “human-computer dialogue” in China, with over 80% being invention patents. Among all patent applications, more than 120 have been authorized. So far this year, 7 related patents have been published or authorized.

Who Will Be Affected by the Emergence of ChatGPT?

Will increasingly intelligent artificial intelligence “take away our jobs”?
After watching ChatGPT write a complete poker game in just a few minutes, the programming community began to panic. A programmer responsible for game development expressed to Guoshi Zhichong that after seeing ChatGPT’s coding speed, he felt a lot of pressure, thinking that this year would be tougher.
However, some opinions suggest that this can at least reduce the burden on programmers and improve work efficiency. It is equivalent to not having to write the first draft by oneself; instead, one can just proofread, with ChatGPT handling the easy code, saving a lot of work.
Recently, Caitong Securities used ChatGPT to write a research report on the medical beauty industry, including an industry overview and global market analysis.
“Undeniably, ChatGPT has a high level of expression in writing and title creation, but reports formed through this direct generation + translation model still have problems,” Caitong Securities stated. Issues include punctuation and terminology errors, and the inability to ascertain the source and reliability of cited data.
Dylan Roberts stated, “ChatGPT will automate the routine tasks that knowledge workers currently engage in, allowing them to focus on more valuable tasks.”
At the same time, several industry insiders analyzed that in some purely technical jobs, ChatGPT can effectively improve work efficiency, potentially saving labor costs for companies.
AI makes our lives more convenient and our work more efficient, but highly advanced artificial intelligence is subtly influencing human creativity and learning abilities.
According to a survey, currently, 89% of college students in the United States use ChatGPT for homework. The New York education system has completely banned ChatGPT, as teachers see it as a “flood beast,” yet it continues to be used recklessly by students to cheat.
Where there is an offense, there is a defense. A research team at Stanford University has proposed a new algorithm called DetectGPT for detecting AI-generated text. This algorithm can determine whether the text is machine-generated without requiring training AI or collecting large datasets for comparison. The research team claims that the accuracy of the new algorithm has significantly improved and indicates that this technology can effectively counter the increasingly common occurrence of AI writing papers in the future.
In summary, ChatGPT is undoubtedly an outstanding AI at this stage, capable of generating logical dialogues and producing a large amount of high-quality text content in a short time, as well as providing relatively accurate answers and self-corrections.
However, as warned on the official website, ChatGPT “may occasionally produce incorrect information” and “may occasionally generate harmful instructions or biased content,” and it also lacks the ability to understand complex and abstract systems.
