AI Takes Its First Step Out of the Cave

Generative AI has been a hot technology and application in LLM since ChatGPT.
Recently, Agentic AI has become a trend, also known as the next frontier, a way out after the ceiling of LLM.
What is Agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems with autonomous behavior, environmental perception, and goal-driven capabilities. It can make decisions and execute tasks autonomously based on set goals, exhibiting a high degree of autonomy and flexibility, similar to virtual assistants, automated agents, or robots.
The current stage of Agentic AI is a preliminary version that connects to users’ computers and mobile phones, primarily based on users’ natural language commands, then autonomously reasoning, planning, and executing tasks on the web and applications on computers and phones, ultimately helping users achieve their goals without frequent interaction or manual intervention.
Specifically, the agent AI solves problems through the following four-step process:
Perceive: The AI agent collects and processes data from various sources, such as sensors, databases, and digital interfaces.
Reason: Large language models serve as reasoning engines, understanding tasks, generating solutions, and coordinating specialized models for specific functions.
Act: By integrating with external tools and software through application programming interfaces, agent AI can quickly execute tasks based on its planned actions.
Learn: Agent AI continuously improves through feedback loops, feeding interaction-generated data back into the system to enhance the model.
This forms a positive reinforcement learning and data flywheel.
Theoretically, more advanced Agentic AI would enter robotics, allowing robotic agents to accomplish physical world tasks. However, this is referred to as embodied intelligence or physical intelligence.
Why Do We Need Agentic AI?
Simply put, LLM cannot help you execute tasks accurately and effectively; it can only provide suggestions and is not responsible for the results. For example, if you ask ChatGPT to recommend some philosophy books, it can only suggest based on its training data, which may include information from the internet or past memories, but sometimes it may also provide incorrect or hallucinated book lists.
In contrast, Agentic AI can provide suggestions but more often can think, reason, and execute directly without human intervention.
For instance, it can autonomously search, open shopping apps, compare prices across platforms, filter some good philosophy books based on your past browsing history, and then proactively place orders for you, requiring only your authorization for payment. It can be said that Agentic AI is close to the intelligent butler seen in science fiction movies, like Jarvis. It can accomplish complex tasks involving intricate workflows, data-driven decisions, and actions with minimal human intervention.

From the Platonic cave of generative AI to Agentic AI truly entering people’s real lives, we are one step closer to the physical world, and AGI is one step closer. Next year, we will also see various Agentic AIs.
