NO.3 Major and Employment
According to data, the scale of graduates in the AI major from ordinary colleges and universities nationwide is between 2000-2500, with a gender ratio of 80% male to 20% female, and a ratio of liberal arts to sciences of 16% to 84%. In the past three years, the national employment rate has remained stable, generally between 92% and 100%. Although the scale of graduates is relatively small, the employment rate is at a high level.
In recent years, the scale of talent training in the AI major has continued to expand, becoming a definite “hot commodity.” From the perspective of enrollment, the AI major has shown three characteristics:
First, the admission scores are high. For example, Zhejiang University’s AI major has ranked within the top 300 in the province for the past two years; Xi’an University of Electronic Science and Technology’s undergraduate program in AI has an average admission score of no less than 610 points in the province for the past two years.
Second, there is high interest in the major. At a recent college admission consultation event held in Beijing, many candidates showed strong interest in the AI major, with students particularly interested in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and speech recognition.
Third, there is a strong desire for further study. Most students and parents have indicated they will choose to pursue further studies after completing their undergraduate degree.
Career Paths:Graduates of the AI major can stay on campus to teach, work in company R&D positions, or join AI laboratories. Specific positions include: Data Mining Engineer, Embedded Algorithm Engineer, Pre-sales Technical Support (Business Intelligence Direction), Industry Researcher (Stock Market).

521 Institutions Offer AI Majors
In terms of regional distribution, multiple provinces and cities, including Beijing, Henan, Hubei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Guangdong, have established Telecommunications Engineering and Management related majors, with Shandong Province having the highest number of institutions offering this major.
Tsinghua University established the AI Class (referred to as the “Smart Class”) in 2019 and has enrolled students, maintaining close cooperation with various departments such as the Department of Computer Science and Technology and the School of Software, aiming for a broad foundation and interdisciplinary training to deepen students’ understanding of AI.
Peking University officially established the School of Intelligence in December 2021, integrating the strengths of the original Department of Intelligent Science, Wang Xuan Computing Research Institute, and the AI Research Institute, incorporating “Intelligent Science and Technology” into Peking University’s “Double First-Class” discipline construction. It has created two flagship classes, “Peking University Common Class” and “Peking University Smart Class,” relying on Yuanpei College and the School of Information.
The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences established the College of Artificial Intelligence in May 2017, the first college in China to comprehensively carry out teaching and research in the field of AI. The undergraduate program in AI relies on the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for teaching and training, thus possessing a strong faculty and excellent research conditions and environment, focusing on cultivating leading talents in the field of AI.
Nanjing University established the College of Artificial Intelligence in 2018, with the AI major developing from the long-term development of computer science. It relies on the National Key Laboratory of New Technology for Computer Software at Nanjing University, forming a team led by Professor Zhou Zhihua, who has international influence in the field of AI, and integrating the advantages of liberal arts, science, engineering, and medicine at Nanjing University to develop AI undergraduate talent cultivation.
Zhejiang University has set up an engineering experimental class (Zhu Kezhen College Turing Class) for the AI major, currently offering five training directions, including cognitive mechanisms and AI theory. In 2018, it established the Ministry of Education’s AI Collaborative Innovation Center and in 2019, it founded the AI Department and began enrolling undergraduate students for the AI major.
Xi’an University of Electronic Science and Technology has an AI major that is a national first-class undergraduate program, mainly focusing on intelligent algorithm design, brain-like perception, and computing, training professionals in the AI field characterized by “intelligent + information processing.”
