TCC recommends: Hello everyone, this is TCC Translation Intelligence Bureau, I am Zhang Yutong. This article explores the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of brands and design, and suggests how designers should continue to provide irreplaceable value. The author uses their own practice as an example to introduce how to use the Midjourney model to create a series of graphics for new brand identities, and mentions that if not careful, AI could also affect the quality of our work. Finally, the author calls for the community to jointly establish an AI knowledge base to ensure our work achieves creative success.
Today, it is no secret that artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on the future of brands and design β and as designers, we should think about how to continue providing irreplaceable value.
Some creatives, such as Alif Ibrahim from It’s Nice That, recommend using it to automate simple and repetitive tasks, such as resizing, exporting, or unconscious pixel pushing.
Others, like Evelio, the creative director of IDP Direct, see it as a way to build more curated mood boards and quickly convey brand concepts to clients.
However, as the founder of a branding agency, I embarked on a journey to explore how AI can improve our creation and creative processes.
1. What I Did
If you are not familiar with Midjourney, you can understand it as one of the most outstanding models in AI image generation so far.
I experimented with the model to understand how uniquely it can create a series of graphics for new brand identities.
2. How I Did It
Although this exercise was more like a test, I learned some valuable insights during the process. Let’s go through this process together.
1) Define Graphic Standards
When defining the style, first determine and build upon the unique visual characteristics or themes that your graphics should embody.
For this brand, let’s explore a style that captures 3D momentum and glowing color blends.
Graphic inspiration captures two buckets: 3D momentum and glowing color blends
It is helpful to reference existing inspirations you find online or capture in person. Compiling inspirations into buckets will form a clearer reference framework and later become useful inputs for Midjourney.
In our case, I have already designed the LOGO and color palette. Importantly, the new graphics should closely align and work together as a unified system.
Refining brand assets into abstract snapshots
By abstracting the features of the LOGO and color palette (as shown above), it can help guide more brand-aligned image results in Midjourney.
This is the collection of image inputs we will use to generate new images in Midjourney
Now that we have identified graphic inspirations and brand asset images, it is time to bring them all into Midjourney.
2) Fusion in the Journey
While most of us are familiar with the /imagine command, I personally find it not as powerful when handling very specific visual results.
In our case, we will use the /blend command.
This command will “blend” multiple images together and generate an image that lies between them.
Activate the blend command by typing /blend + (Return) in the Discord message box
By typing /blend + (Return) in the Discord message box, the drag-and-drop module above π will appear.
While Midjourney allows blending up to 5 images at once, I recommend sticking to 2-3 images for better design control.
Now it’s game time. Let’s upload the image inputs to the drag-and-drop module. Here are some different combinations I explored:
Mixing and matching our image inputs helps narrow down the style range
It seems that one of the results above needs further refinement. As an example, we will choose to remix this image result:
We will remix this image with another image, hoping it will bring the result closer to what we are looking for:
Remixing image with image input
Repeating this process will help build a cohesive image library with a unified style.
Finally, this is my landing point:
During this process, I also created some other interesting styles:
3) Enhance Graphic Proportions
Now that we have a series of graphics we are satisfied with, we will upscale them to a higher resolution than what Midjourney allows.
For upscaling, I recommend a free tool like BigJPG.com.
4) Post-Editing
MidJourney is not perfect, and in some cases, further editing is needed, whether it is fine-tuning colors or compositions, I use Photoshop for the finishing touches.
If you want to continue editing with Midjourney text prompts, Lars Nielsen’s prompt guide is a great beginner reference.
3. In Closing
This exercise does not guarantee that everyone will get the same results. Instead, it is meant to showcase an example of the power of applying AI to design.
Designers ultimately need to consider how to purposefully use AI; using this technology can significantly impact simplifying tedious design workflows, but if not careful, it could also affect the quality of our work.
Looking ahead, it is important for us as a community to jointly build our AI knowledge to ensure our creative work achieves success.
