Recently, Professor Rui Huaxia, Xerox Chair Professor at the Simon Business School of the University of Rochester and a member of the Goergen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, delivered a lecture titled “Prospects of General Artificial Intelligence” for the students and faculty of the School of Business Administration (MBA School). The lecture was attended by the Party Secretary of the School of Business Administration (MBA School), Professor Sun Yuan, Professor Hu Weiwei from the International Business Department, and graduate students from the college. Professor Rui shared the history and current state of artificial intelligence development, and delved into the development path, risks, and potential impacts of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) on human society.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Rui reviewed the development history of artificial intelligence, from reasoning and induction methods in the 1950s to modern deep learning techniques. He analyzed in detail the opportunities and challenges brought by technological advancements, while also discussing the potential changes in social structure due to artificial intelligence. The rapid progress of AGI technology may also bring significant ethical issues and challenges in social governance, necessitating timely follow-up of relevant systems and laws.
Professor Rui believes that the successful development of AGI marks a critical moment in human civilization, bringing both tremendous opportunities and significant risks. The potential risks of AGI include profound impacts on jobs, potentially leading to large-scale automation that could disrupt traditional employment and economic and social structures; improper use of AGI technology, which might lead to deviations in pursuing human-defined goals, including instrumental goal pursuits and external alignment issues; he emphasized the importance and challenges of ensuring that AI goals align with human values during AGI development; and the possibility of AGI going out of control, including risks in both digital and physical security domains. Additionally, he discussed the challenges of technological diffusion, emphasizing that different countries and organizations may face inequalities in addressing AGI risks due to disparities in technological capabilities and regulatory levels.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Rui engaged in interactive discussions with students and faculty, sharing his views on the future development of AGI and offering some advice for young people in the AGI era. He believes that this is both a challenging and an opportunity-filled era. The advent of AGI not only brings potential for transformation in human society but also provides a vast exploration space for the younger generation in research and practice. He encouraged young people to maintain a positive mindset and embrace change and innovation in the face of challenges brought by AGI.

In this lecture, Professor Rui provided an insightful explanation and rich, detailed cases, sharing professional knowledge about artificial intelligence and AGI, analyzing the opportunities and challenges that AGI may bring, profoundly inspiring everyone to think about the future development of society, and encouraging us to actively explore in our respective fields to welcome the arrival of the artificial intelligence era. In an era of rapid technological development, we not only need to possess professional knowledge but also cultivate critical thinking and interdisciplinary perspectives to tackle the complex issues arising from technological change. Through Professor Rui’s profound insights, we believe we will gain a clearer understanding of the potential and challenges of AGI and prepare ourselves mentally and practically for the possible changes to come.
