In recent days, the hottest product in the tech circle is DeepSeek, a domestic AI model product developed by the leading domestic quantitative hedge fund, Huanshifang Quant.
Compared to overseas models like ChatGPT, the biggest feature of DeepSeek is that it can achieve high performance with extremely low training costs, providing new possibilities for the development of large models.
The New York Times recently published an article: How Chinese A.I. Start-Up DeepSeek Is Competing With Silicon Valley Giants
The author believes that DeepSeek’s breakthroughs could significantly weaken the impact of the U.S. GPU chip ban.
One of the most interesting aspects of DeepSeek compared to other models is that it writes down the entire thought process, and just reading this thought process can be enlightening. To enable this feature, you can select the “Deep Thinking (R1)” function when searching.
For example, I asked it a question: why are people today less happy than those in the past?
The large model first considers whether the assumption of the question is valid, and if so, what the reasons would be. It starts with technological advancements and thinks about the negative impact of social media on happiness. The lives portrayed on social media are often beautified, which can easily lead to feelings of anxiety. It also mentions the need to find some research results to support this statement.
Next, it also considers factors like the fast pace of modern life, reduced social connections, and environmental pollution.
It even questions and reflects on the conclusions drawn earlier. For instance, at the end of the thought process, it points out that the above viewpoints may be overly generalized. People in the past also faced a host of issues, and happiness may not have been that high, plus the criteria for measuring happiness in the past might differ from those today.
It can be observed that DeepSeek’s thought process is very similar to that of humans, and in terms of logical rigor, it is even stronger than most people.
This deep thinking feature of the large model can be used to train the logic of English writing. If you often feel that your IELTS or GRE essays are logically chaotic and your thoughts are disjointed, you can definitely ask DeepSeek about the topic, learn its thought chain, and apply this way of thinking to other essays.
DeepSeek’s grammar analysis capability is also very strong. For example, I asked it a complex sentence from New Concept English:
Carver Mead, a pioneer in integrated circuits and a professor of computer science at the California Institute of Technology, notes there are now work-stations that enable engineers to design, test and produce chips right on their desks, much the way an editor creates a newsletter on a Macintosh.
DeepSeek started analyzing the main structure of the sentence, breaking it down into subject, verb, and object, and accurately identifying the appositive clauses, object clauses, attributive clauses, and manner adverbial clauses.
If you have long and complex sentences that you cannot understand, you can ask the large model to help analyze them and learn its analytical approach.
It can also be used to modify English sentences, which is very helpful for writing. For example, in the sentence, There are hundreds of millions of stars in the space. Is there a problem with the use of the article?
After analysis, DeepSeek accurately pointed out the issue with using “the”: when we refer to “the universe space,” we should use “space” without the article “the.”
It also mentioned that while the quantity of hundreds of millions of stars is unreasonable, it is grammatically correct.
I used the test results from ChatGPT for comparison, and GPT only mentioned the article issue without addressing the star quantity issue.
I also tested several other sentences, and overall, DeepSeek’s ability to modify sentences is on par with ChatGPT, and in some cases, it performs better.
While ChatGPT is user-friendly, many students still cannot use it. DeepSeek can now serve as a perfect alternative. Currently, registration and use of DeepSeek are free, and it can be accessed smoothly across the country.
The web address for DeepSeek is: https://chat.deepseek.com/
It also has a corresponding app, which can be found by searching for DeepSeek in the mobile app store.
