Artificial Intelligence and “Natural Language Processing”

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of artificial intelligence and linguistics, and it is an important direction in the development of artificial intelligence. This field explores how to enable computers to understand, process, and utilize natural language, aiming to allow machines to conform to human communication methods, facilitating interaction between humans and computers, and enabling computers to replace humans in processing large-scale natural language information, making our lives and work easier and more convenient. Since language is a proof of human thought, natural language processing is considered the pinnacle of artificial intelligence, hailed as the “pearl on the crown of artificial intelligence.”

Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing

Development History

NLP originated in the 1950s, where early NLP mainly simulated human language learning habits, focusing on grammatical rules. In the 1980s, with the improvement of computing power and the emergence of large corpora, NLP shifted to statistical methods, during which many statistical-based methods for machine translation, word segmentation, and part-of-speech tagging emerged. Entering the 21st century, especially in the past decade, the development of deep learning technology has greatly promoted the progress of NLP, with technologies such as Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM), and Transformers significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of natural language processing.

Principles and Applications

The mechanism of NLP involves two processes: Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Natural Language Generation (NLG).

NLU focuses on how to understand text, including machine reading comprehension, text classification, named entity recognition, coreference resolution, and syntactic parsing.

NLG focuses on how to generate natural text after understanding the text, including automatic summarization, machine translation, question-answering systems, and chatbots.

NLP is changing the way we communicate with computers, allowing people to use computers in their most familiar languages, which greatly facilitates and promotes the application of computers. Meanwhile, since natural language serves as a carrier of information in human society, there exists a massive amount of text in various fields, making NLP an important supporting technology that plays a crucial role in many areas.

In the field of computing, NLP can perform machine translation, speech recognition, and speech synthesis; in the information field, NLP can be used for text retrieval, providing and optimizing search results based on understanding user needs; it can perform information extraction and classification, making the organization, reading, and use of text more convenient and efficient; it can provide personalized information recommendations and services by analyzing user interests, preferences, and behaviors……

These technological applications are present in all aspects of our lives and work, such as the search engines we commonly use, voice assistants on our phones, translation software, intelligent customer service, chatbots, voice input, spell checkers, intelligent grading, etc., all of which greatly improve the efficiency and quality of our lives and work.

Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing

Although NLP may not sound as popular as big data or machine learning, in reality, we use it every day, and in the future, due to the complexity of human language, with the in-depth development of deep learning technology and multimedia data, NLP has a very broad space for development and application.

So, where will the development and application of natural language processing head in the future? What new impacts will it have on our production and life? On August 25, 26, and 27, at the 6th Southern Information Conference, the Guangdong Chief Information Officer Association invites you to step into the world of AI, understand AI knowledge, experience the charm of AI, embrace AI technology, and promote AI technology to facilitate personal progress and empower enterprise development.
