In January of this year, while some smartphone manufacturers were still focused on voice assistants, Honor launched the industry’s first human-computer interaction system based on intent recognition, the MagicOS 8.0 system, which is equipped with a self-developed 70 billion parameter “magic large model”.
In terms of platform-level AI and intent recognition human-computer interaction, Honor introduced the “Any Door” and “Dynamic Capsule” features in MagicOS 8.
Among these, based on the “Any Door” feature, Honor MagicOS provides different application jump suggestions based on the user’s context and actual semantics, allowing users to perform one-step application jumps through side-swipe dragging. For example, if you want to navigate to an address sent by a friend in WeChat, simply drag the text information containing the address to the edges of the screen, which will automatically trigger the Any Door, and the system will quickly recognize the user’s intent, identifying the address information in the current chat and launching the map app, automatically switching to navigation mode.
Additionally, the “Dynamic Capsule” module newly added to the top of the screen in MagicOS 8.0 can display information about services the user wants to obtain without interfering with their current operations, making messages more timely. When it is inconvenient to click with a hand, simply gazing at the dynamic notification will allow entry into the application. This feature, combined with 3D face recognition and eye-tracking technology, achieves a further intelligent interaction.
Furthermore, MagicOS 8.0 includes the Smart Clip feature, which can intelligently detect and filter images and videos in the photo gallery based on user preferences and key nodes, actively matching music subtitles to create a video in one click.
On October 23, Honor launched a more complete version of MagicOS 9.0, which realizes AI reconstruction OS ahead of the industry. This is the industry’s first personalized all-scenario AI operating system equipped with intelligent agents, further enhancing interaction experience. Zhao Ming even claimed: “The AI OS of the future has arrived”.
With smarter AI agents, the Any Door feature on the Honor Magic7 series has evolved from “drag selection” to “circle selection”, and in terms of information understanding, it has progressed from “single intent understanding” to “complex intent recognition that integrates contextual semantics”.
For example, in the scenario of quickly recognizing navigation addresses in WeChat chats, if a friend sends an unclear address, the previous AI might fail to accurately identify it. However, on the Honor Magic7 series, you only need to circle the chat record and drag it to the navigation software of the Any Door, and the AI agent can accurately lock the location information and navigate based on the context of the chat semantics.
The AI functionality of the Honor Magic7 series has garnered significant discussion, as exemplified by Zhao Ming’s “It’s just a matter of saying a sentence.” This is a typical case of how Honor applies AI to smartphones: when a user issues the command “order coffee”, the phone deeply understands the user’s needs based on their usage habits and autonomously helps the user search and complete the ordering process.
In fact, whether it’s “order coffee with a sentence” or “cancel app auto-renewal with a sentence”, these functionalities essentially involve effective recognition of screen content. Currently, the YOYO intelligent agent can execute 900 tasks automatically, including one-sentence queries & cancellations for app auto-renewals, one-sentence document transfers, one-sentence application permission management, one-sentence application notification management, and one-sentence form filling. The Honor Magic7 series also features AI facial detection capabilities, linking AI with security, allowing the AI model to accurately identify deep fakes in videos during video calls or live broadcasts, providing users with probability prompts regarding the use of AI face-swapping by others.
The AI image expansion feature of the Honor Magic7 series can also analyze image content and style through deep learning, automatically generating pixels that match the original image, extending the visual range while maintaining the original details and clarity.
Transformative Progress of AI Agents
From the launch of the first-generation Magic with the Magic Live intelligent system in 2016, to the layout of platform-level AI with MagicOS 7.0 in 2022, and to the creation of a new paradigm of intent recognition human-computer interaction with platform-level AI in MagicOS 8.0, and finally to the smarter AI agents in MagicOS 9.0, Honor has accumulated over 10 billion in AI R&D expenses and achieved 2100 AI patent results.
At the MagicOS 9.0 launch conference, Honor also revealed that the Honor Magic7 series equipped with MagicOS 9.0 passed the evaluation of the “Terminal Intelligence Leveling Testing Program” issued by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, achieving the industry’s highest level L3 in terminal intelligence (possessing high intelligence, accurately sensing and recognizing users’ complex intents, and autonomously planning to complete various tasks based on user information).
According to the leveling testing program, the terminal intelligence level is divided into five levels from L1 to L5, ranging from low to high: intelligent response level, intelligent assistance level, intelligent assistant level, intelligent collaboration level, and autonomous intelligence level, with L5 level possessing comprehensive intelligence and the ability to autonomously plan and complete all types of tasks.
It is reported that driven by AI agents, MagicOS 9.0 has achieved features such as fuzzy intent understanding, complex task planning, and automatic execution, providing a small window running function. The YOYO intelligent agent has also been comprehensively upgraded, easily handling various user needs. Meanwhile, MagicOS 9.0 also introduces new features and technology upgrades such as the full-stack Vulkan graphics engine, AI predictive scheduling engine, and AI protection.
Currently, many smartphone manufacturers focus their AI functionalities primarily on mainstream applications such as photo albums and emails, increasing AI functionality upgrades and expanding application scenarios while also emphasizing the delegation of AI capabilities to “small models” such as image models and voice models.
However, compared to MagicOS 9.0, some comments suggest that “they each have their advantages, but in comparison, Honor’s AI agents resemble a composite of the aforementioned AI models, capable of cross-application integration, allowing the phone system and intelligent agents to fully merge.” Some even believe that Honor’s AI agents are more like a true “butler” or “assistant” that can understand what we say, rather than just a tool.
It is evident that the AI capabilities integrated into the Honor Magic7 series are not merely simple “small models” or just an upgrade from the previous version; instead, they represent a “transformative” advancement in smartphone intelligence.
Recently, Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm, also envisioned the future of AI smartphones, stating, “By 2029, AI-based smartphones will reach the hands of every consumer worldwide.”
